Description
A visit by the Chief of Staff of the Pakistan Army, General Nawaz, was discussed in a meeting at the MOD. The key points of interest were:
-
On nuclear matters, General Nawaz reiterated that Pakistan had no nuclear device and had no intention of exploding one. They also denied transferring nuclear technology to third countries. Pakistan had requested nuclear cooperation with China, which had been reduced after India signed the NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) before Pakistan.
-
Regarding missiles, General Nawaz confirmed that the contract with China for the purchase of M-11 missiles would proceed. Pakistan had paid for the missiles and manufacturing technology transfer. They assured China that they would not modify the missiles and believed the M-11 fell within the parameters of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR).
-
General Nawaz expressed interest in sending Pakistani candidates to Sandhurst for training. The MOD welcomed Pakistani candidates but did not discuss funding, which might require reallocating funds from lower-priority courses to accommodate Sandhurst candidates.
The document concludes with remarks from TM Dowse of the Non-Proliferation and Defense Department at the MOD.
