Description

Mr. Rinl of the Swiss Embassy visited this morning and expressed concern about a mistake made by Swiss authorities regarding the procedure for joining the Suppliers Group. He asked if Switzerland would still be invited to attend the upcoming meeting. It was explained that it would depend on the views of the other members of the group, who had been consulted by Canada. While the Swiss note did not conform to the standard obligations, if the other members were agreeable, Switzerland could join based on their note. However, there might be objections since reservations were raised when Japan deviated from the standard note in the past. A decision on Switzerland's invitation would be communicated by the end of tomorrow, and Mr. Rinl suggested a phone call on Wednesday afternoon would be sufficient to notify the Swiss delegation
