JCPOA
Description
The agreement that was reached in Vienna on July 14th, 2015, between Iran and several countries, including China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, regarding Iran's nuclear program, was welcomed as a historic moment. The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign and Security Policy played a crucial role in facilitating these negotiations, with the support of the Austrian government. The agreement required Iran to fully implement its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), including the roadmap agreed with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in order to build international confidence in the peaceful nature of its nuclear program. The JCPOA was endorsed by the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015), which urged its full implementation. All parties were called upon to work towards the implementation of the JCPOA, with the High Representative continuing to play a coordinating role. The IAEA had an important role in verifying the JCPOA, and all countries were encouraged to support it, including financially. The JCPOA was expected to improve relations between the European Union, its Member States, and Iran, as well as regional and international relations.
