The President's National Security Strategy to Combat WMD: Libya's Announcement
Description
On this day, the UK and US annouced details of an agreeement with Libya concerning the latter's WMD program. Libya disclosed significant information about its nuclear, chemical, biological, and ballistic missile-related activities to the US and UK. Libya pledged to eliminate all elements of its chemical and nuclear weapons programs, eliminate ballistic missiles beyond 300 km range with a payload of 500kg, accept international inspections, and eliminate chemical weapons stocks and munitions. Libya's announcement was a product of the US President's national security strategy to combat weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and terrorism. The strategy gave regimes a choice to renounce WMD and rejoin the international community or pursue WMD at great peril and international isolation.
