A Research and Training Agenda on Artificial Intelligence for WMD Nonproliferation

On the 29th January 2024, I joined colleagues at CNS and a specialist at Open AI for the CNS seminar, "CNS Seminar on the Intersection of Artificial Intelligence and WMD Nonproliferation" which can be viewed below.

I believe AI and machine learning will be of huge value to the nonproliferation community and in my first set of remarks, I focused on nonproliferation use cases for the technology.

I also believe that LLMs have the potential to contribute to CBRN proliferation and that current regulatory approaches are falling short. This is the focus of my second set of remarks in the video and a forthcoming publication.

Given that I have been working to develop machine learning approaches to nonproliferation for at least a decade, I am both excited and hesitant about the focus machine learning has at present. As there is so much hype around the technology, I believe there is a need to cut through the hype by identifying specific use cases for the technology and pathways for its misuse. This is a core focus of my current research.
